Australian Lesbian couple refused Wedding Cake by New Zealand baker

I was saddened this week to read yet another story of a same sex couple being refused service by a wedding vendor.

This time in New Zealand, a lesbian couple from Australia who began planning their wedding before same sex marriage was legalised in Australia have been denied a wedding cake by their supplier of choice. The baker has cited ‘religious beliefs’ and I have to wonder if they check every customers ‘religious beliefs’ when they are requested to make a cake, and if anyone who doesn’t share the same beliefs is denied service? I can only assume not. The US Supreme court previously sided with a baker in Colorado over a similar incident in 2012 and in New Zealand the Human Rights Act states state it is unlawful to discriminate against anyone because of their sexual orientation, however this gets overruled by the right to freedom of religion and belief.

I can’t help thinking if you are a wedding vendor, in the wedding business, perhaps you are now in the wrong business if you cannot service the full wedding market?! Either way it is a crying shame this is still happening in this day and age and only highlights the need (where there shouldn’t be one!!) for directories like Rainbow Love Wedding Directory, no one wants to feel judged or be let down whilst planning what’s meant to be the happiest day of their lives.
